HTML 4 for the World Wide Web: Visual Quickstart Guide by Liz Castro. A nice guide for getting started; the first such book I consulted.

Sams Teach Yourself HTML and XHTML in 24 Hours (5th Edition) by Dick Oliver and Charles Ashbacher. Dick Oliver's 4th edition of this book was an excellent guide to taking HTML further. The fifth edition adds the second latest thing, XHTML (XML is the latest). Should be good.

Sams Teach Yourself JavaScript in 24 Hours (2nd Edition) by Michael Moncur. A nice book for getting started in Javascript. It inspired the mouse and rat races.

The Book of JavaScript A Practical Guide to Interactive Web Pages (With CD-ROM) by Dave Thau, the Webmonkey's Javascript master. His Javascript tutorial got me started before I picked up the Sams guide above.

Other books about HTML, etc.
