<stanza>
<l>You crushed it badly, Christ, this reptile so vile</l>
<l>That every truth finds in its path!</l>
<l>With its hideous bends it wraps up the whole world,</l>
<l>And its deep sting remains in the human race's side.</l>
</stanza>
<stanza>
<l>You promised us the horrible viper</l>
<l>Would never again tighten its sallow sections about us,</l>
<l>That man would be the son, and God would be the father,</l>
<l>And that you alone would pay the earthly ransom.</l>
</stanza>
<stanza>
<l>Two thousand years have passed and man still waits,</l>
<l>Ah! rise up to your Father, angel of the future,</l>
<l>And tell him evening has replaced the dawn,</l>
<l>And that the celestial gift is too slow in coming.</l>
</stanza>
